“We're in our third season of partnering with OPC on the post-show series "Formative Stages: Theater and the Life of the Mind" and it's been an incredible way to create an added level of value to our audiences' experience of art, theater and ideas. A frequent comment we've heard is that following a vibrant post-show conversation, the discussion continues out the front door of the Gerding Theater and onto the Streetcar--which is more than we can ask for. This is an ideal platform for exploring how shared stories tell us about who we are and what we believe and an even better way to use the arts to frame questions around love, power, conflict, loss, justice and other big ideas.”

“It has been Portland Opera's great privilege to partner with OPI--our Destination Opera series has a wonderful following of folks eager to explore the psychoanalytic avenues of opera--that most irrational of arts! There is a huge hunger for intellectual discussion and for making connections between seemingly unrelated things. People come to our discussions not even knowing that they are looking for such connections, and leave satisfied--and most importantly they come back. OPI has offered us a deep and meaningful partnership--lending insight, expertise and enthusiasm to our programming. I find it fascinating, and I have taken great joy in getting to work with the brilliant people who volunteer their time and energy to make Destination Opera such an exciting program. ”

A TRADITION OF ENGAGEMENT WITH THE COMMUNITY

OPC is committed to a variety of community activities intended to raise awareness of mental health issues. OPC’s varied offerings benefit a wide audience and its training programs provide opportunities for low-fee psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy for those with limited financial means.

OPC collaborates with several arts organizations in the ARTS ON THE COUCH series, providing psychoanalytic speakers to a variety of venues. In collaboration with Portland Center Stage, we established Formative Stages: Theater and the Life of the Mind, a lively series of post-play discussions, facilitated by OPC psychoanalytic speakers, now in its third session. OPC collaborates with the Portland Opera in Destination Opera: From Music to Psyche, an entertaining and thought-provoking psychoanalytic-operatic discussion held prior to the run of each opera of the season. In addition, OPC collaborates with the NW Film Center, at the Whitsell Auditorium. The program Reel Minds: Insights offers psychoanalytic speakers who provide thought-provoking post-film commentary.

OPC will continue to expand and develop opportunities to share psychoanalytic ideas with the Portland community. Come experience these exciting events.

We invite you to join us in expanding our community connections.
