Dear Friends of OPC,
Of the limitless ways we might spend our energy, why psychoanalytic education? Why
participate in Oregon Psychoanalytic Center programs? Why focus on fundraising for a
psychoanalytic organization? Rather than answer these questions, let’s consider how an
analytic disposition may respond, by reflecting on “why.”
We often find 'why' accompanied by confusion or troubled experiences, where the word
becomes not a mode of inquiry but a demand for reason-giving, as an accusation. It’s easy
to imagine a finger-pointed charge of "Why did you do that?!"; the 'Why' as a function of
shaming, as in 'How dare you!'
Now envision another example of inquiry. Recall a look of curiosity, that expression of
wonder – head tilting, wide-eyed, as familiar as it is endearing. We've all seen it, if not in
our canine or feline friends, then in our young; it is a moment of exploration, of openness,
free of judgment. This kind of ‘why’ brings growth and renewal.
As we reflect on the impact of psychoanalytic education, part of its unique approach is to
nurture an attitude of open curiosity. Cultivating this kind of interest in our community lies
at the heart of our programs. OPC provides an opportunity to engage in an environment
where a desire for knowledge about the conscious and unconscious aspects of our minds
and relationships is a central guiding passion. Psychoanalytic education increases our
capacities to understand and dream in as-yet-unimaginable creative ways. Given the
breadth of experiences we each encounter, the value of this effort is self-evident.
This year, we aim to raise $50,000. Reaching this goal will strengthen our growth and
respectively your local analytic community. By giving to OPC, you are not investing only in
a cause or an organization, but also in your community of clinicians, who are dearly
needed in these current times. Their investments in themselves and their work ripple
outward to help individuals in the greater Portland area and beyond.
Please consider helping OPC reach this goal by December 31, 2023. With your help, we
will continue pursuing our ‘why’- to encourage, enrich, and expand psychoanalytic
education to equip clinicians with a deeper understanding of being human.
To those who have participated in our programming and donated in the past, we offer our
sincere thanks. We are most grateful for your continued support. And for those willing and
inspired to do so, please consider giving, participating in our programs, and joining OPC!
Sincerely,
